【要旨】
Very little is known about the folding principles of chromosomes in the Archaea, the closest prokaryotic relatives of eukaryotes. By performing Hi-C, we have recently shown that chromosomes of Sulfolobus archaea are organized into eukaryotic A/B compartment-like structures. The compartmentalization of the Sulfolobus chromosomes is driven by a hitherto uncharacterized SMC protein that we named “coalescin.” On the basis of our findings and other studies, I will discuss common and unique features of chromosome folding between the three domains of life.
